Haircare: Body Shop Rainforest Radiance Shampoo and Conditioner

The Body Shop Rainforest Radiance Shampoo For Coloured Hair - £6.00The Body Shop Rainforest Radiance Conditioner For Coloured Hair - £6.00
The main reason I picked up this shampoo and conditioner from Body Shop was because I saw that they made a big hoo-ha about not containing silicones. For years my hairdresser has been saying how awful silicones are for your hair and that all drugstore brands contain them and that is why I should buy their expensive shampoo. And I have to admit, a few times I have bought their expensive shampoos and conditioners (particularly Aveda) and really loved them and seen a difference. However I cannot afford to be buying Aveda products all the time, so these Body Shop ones which have no silicones, sulphates, parabens or colourants really intrigued me.

So first off, the scent. I love having really nicely smelling shampoos and conditioners. Not only does it smell all nice when you are in the shower but I love it when your hair smells nice throughout the day. Strangely enough the shampoo had a nice fragrance (kind of like Parma Violets) but the conditioner didn't (it has a bizarre neutral smell that kind of smelt like plastic). So that was a bit annoying as it meant my shower experience wasn't as fun and my hair didn't smell that strongly afterwards - boo.

More importantly, and more disappointingly, the shampoo was kind of rubbish. It hardly lathered at all which made me feel like my hair wasn't clean at all. I ended up rinsing and washing it three times, with not much improvement each time. The conditioner was nice and thick and, apart from the lack of fragrance, was much better than the shampoo.

I've read elsewhere that it makes your hair feel like straw afterwards, mine feels fine to be honest. My one gripe is that my hair just doesn't feel clean. I'm pretty sure I'm going to wake up tomorrow and have to put a fair amount of dry shampoo in it - which is a pain.

I don't know this, but I assume the reason the shampoo didn't lather well was because of the chemical ingredients that were missing. So really I guess you would have to way up whether you wanted to have a more natural shampooing experience or have a better lather. Personally I would go with a better lather. As for the conditioner, the only down side is the lack of scent so I can deal with that. I don't think I will be buying either again though.

Does anyone have any suggestions for more natural shampoos without an extortionate price-tag?

  1. I've been using the Banana shampoo and conditioner from them. The shampoo is nice and cleans well I do find I have to work it threw my hair a bit more but it lathers really nice. The conditioner is a bit on the light side but if you don't need a lot of moisturizer it could work great for you. I add a little bit of moisturizing conditioner to it for my curly hair.

  4. Ugh, there's nothing worse than a shampoo that doesn't lather. I remember once I used a shampoo that didn't lather AT ALL...and then I realized afterwards that it was conditioner! ha ha, I felt silly.

  6. I'm having the same problem at the moment, my hair is stupidly damaged from bleach and it seems like the only effective shampoos and conditioners cost me £20 a bottle, which I just can not afford! X

  7. Heya, I tried these products too and they didn't work for me at all which was a shame but I have found that most whole food shops actually sell really good hair products, and they're not very expensive either!

I recommend anything from the natural collection (especially the tea tree oil shampoo!) http://www.faithinnature.co.uk/

  8. Hmmm this has made me never want to try the Body Shop shampoo and conditioner! I've read good things about their Banana one. I love the Body Shop but I feel reluctant to try their hair care as it doesn't seem as specialised as some of the other products available in drug stores.
I would highly recommend the Naked range (I bought it from Boots but I don't know if they do it in superdrug/supermarkets etc). I'm using the Naked blonder range and I adore it! It's made with 97% natural ingredients and isn't tested on animals which is always a huge plus with me. It contains camomile and lemon to make your hair blonder and my hair has felt in such a better condition since I started using it (and it was really damaged after having blonde highlights done!) My hair seems straighter too :) It doesn't foam amazingly well on first use but it's much better once you've used it a few times and it has a gorgeous natural smell to it.
